Learning Partnerships: Information Literacy for All - a UNESCO Perspective
Laurence Zwimpfer (View speaker profile)
Adobe Acrobat PDF Document Full conference paper

Paper Abstract: UNESCO is this year celebrating its 60th birthday. In 1946, UNESCO emerged from the aftermath of the Second World War: "Since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defences of peace must be constructed." The vision that was through international dialogue on matters of education, science and culture (and later on another "c" was added "communication"), people would focus on the constructive dimensions of international relations, never ever wanting to return to the devastation caused by war. Somewhere along the way "information" and "technology" were added, so that today, 60 years later, even though we face the same global issue (world peace) we have many new tools to tackle this challenge.

The Learning Place
Greg O'Grady (View speaker profile)
Adobe Acrobat PDF Document Full conference paper

Paper Abstract: The Learning Place is a mosaic of services generated through a single online learning location within Education Queensland to support both student learning and professional development of staff. It is a massive enterprise that must cater for students ranging from preschool to Year 12, as well as a host of professional educators and administrative staff (both executive and clerical) across the State. No single online learning tool is going to meet the needs of all users.

The real challenge for Education Queensland developers has always been to bring together a myriad of different programs and web services to form a cohesive and accessible set of services without confusing or overwhelming the diverse audience of clients. Currently there are more than 83 000 users enrolled in the Learning Place across Australia - over 70 000 of these users are Education Queensland staff and students. Enrolment in the Learning Place is purely voluntary and these figures provide some testament to the perceived value of the site.

Partnerships in Learning Meeting SA Wine Industry Needs
Judi Brooks (View speaker profile) & Jayne Siegele (View speaker profile)
Adobe Acrobat PDF Document Full conference paper

Paper Abstract: This paper looks at Partnerships formed to meet the needs of the South Australian Wine Industry. TAFESA's Wine, Viticulture and Regional Food Team are leaders in South Australia offering specialist training to industry using various methodologies. A training need was identified through the team's strong Wine Industry partnerships which were that Wine Industry personnel would be required to obtain an additional qualification because of a newly introduced mandatory requirement for NSW Liquor Licensing. To enable them to partake in promotional tastings in New South Wales in particular Wine Australia in 2004 they would need to undertake additional training. A method of delivery apart from face to face classes was needed to not only meet industry requirements it was also necessary to meet regulations and service the industry as a whole no matter the location.

A product needed to be developed which was flexible as well meeting the requirements for providing responsible Service of Alcohol and it was vital it be available in a short time frame. A flexible methodology using an interactive CD-Rom format was chosen as an alternative to traditional lectures to make available the opportunity for as many people as possible to gain the necessary competence in Responsible Service of Alcohol. This in turn allowed industry members to undertake the bridging course so as they could be compliant with New South Wales Liquor Licensing requirements. Throughout the process in being able to provide the necessary training many partnerships were formed which contributed to the initial and ongoing success of alternative delivery projects.

By teachers for teachers: A learning partnership
Dr Mogana Dhamotharan (View speaker profile)
Adobe Acrobat PDF Document Full conference paper

Paper Abstract: The practice of technology in education in Brunei Darussalam dates back to 1984 and like all the other countries in the region is aggressively moving towards becoming e-Brunei as envisaged in its national vision and mission. The Five Pillars in e-Education are: Edunet; e-Learning; Educational Information System; Digital Library; and Human Capacity Building. Given this scenario, the University of Brunei Darussalam is actively engaged in trying to meet the national vision and mission through programs deemed relevant for nation building and excellence. The Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education teacher training programs at the University of Brunei Darussalam encourage and foster the integration of appropriate technology applications in teaching and learning.

For the course in Educational and Information Technology, a core course, five outstanding teachers were selected to be partners based on product, attitude and experience. These teachers completed their Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) program and have been posted back to schools this year. The information presented and shared at this Conference will focus on these teachers' materials and their experiences with using the technology mediated materials in the classroom. It is hope that this will forge other learning partnerships to follow in the effort towards linking schools and the University in the Brunei context.

Working brain-to-brain: ‘Real learning’ - Teacher-directed online live lessons using a synchronous cyber classroom
Megan Hastie (View speaker profile)
Adobe Acrobat PDF Document Full conference paper

Paper Abstract: How can an Australian teacher in a school of distance education provide instruction in 'real time' via the Internet to her very young and very isolated students? A collaborative study of online synchronous learning via the Internet has been undertaken by Ms Megan Hastie at Brisbane School of Distance Education and Professor Nian-Shing Chen of National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU), Taiwan. Access to Professor Chen’s Synchronous Learning Management System (SLMS) platform has enabled schools such as BSDE to adopt e-Learning for teaching and learning. The effective adoption of e-learning for teaching and learning requires an interdisciplinary approach where people work in close collaboration. A good partnership between the three disciplines of subject domain expert, education expert and ICT expert is the key to success. This presentation describes the partnership between BSDE and NSYSU.
